am thinking of buying a Kubota zero turn ZD 28, but am not sure whether to go for the 60 inch mower deck or the 72 inch. The latter would have the advantage of greater acre per hour productivity and the deck would extend farther out beyond the frame of the tractor to facilitate mowing under trees, etc. But I have heard that the 72 inch deck is much more likely to scalp uneven ground (and I have plenty of that). Moreover, I don't get to mow as often as I should, so the grass (and weeds) get long and maybe the 60 inch mower would better handle that situation. In any event, I'd really welcome the views of the pros both on the mower size issue and any opinions on the ZD 28. Also, what is a good price for the ZD 28 with 60 inch/72 inch mower?

If you want to stay with the smaller deck why not go for the ZD21? They also had the 18 which ran the 60 but that was a little under powered with occasional mowing. If you like the larger chassis they also have the ZD-25. ....

Thanks, Art. Following ths board, off and on, over the past six months, I have to say I'm impressed and grateful for the readiness of folks like you to take the time to respond to those in need of advice. Based on my previous experience with tractors (Kubota L 355SS, M 5030, B 7100, B 2400, B 2910), I am inclined to go with more horsepower rather than less. So, I think I'll stay with the ZD 28, especially since I often have to deal with long grass. Any further thoughts would be welcome. ....

I appreciate horsepower and that leaves you with one concern the scalping. I do often tell people lower the deck as low as you can, scalp it all you want and then lets sharpen the blades and put the deck up to your normal height you want to mow. Depending on how things lay you could scalp as much with a 60" driven against the grain so to speak as a 72" with the grain. The 72" being wider is also a bit deeper but an extra gauge wheel or anti scalp roller here or there might prevent you from having problems. ....

Unless your yard is "Pool Table Flat", I'd stick with the 60 in. deck. Our yard just isn't flat enough for a wide deck, we drove a Deere demo with a wide (I think 70 or 72 in.)deck. It left a pretty uneven scalped surface so we got a 54in. on a 345 tractor and it's worked well. Frank. ....

I have owned a ZD21 with 60" deck and have also used a ZD28 with a 72" deck. My personal experience is that the deck on the ZD21 does not portrude past the rear wheel as far as the ZD28, and is much more difficult for trimming. Many times the rear wheel hit the object I was trimming around with the ZD21. I prefer the 72" deck.
